Good evening graduates, parents, and everyone.

My son, Jay Shannon was an artist. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Animation from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. He loved nature, music, technology, and Star Wars. These things greatly influenced his art animation and drawings.

Jay died suddenly in 2008 of a brain seizure and to honor his memory, my husband Jim and I started the Jay Shannon Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is totally funded by the generous and loving donations of his family and friends. This is the fourth year for this award and we hope to continue this for many years to come. It is designed for a deserving Trumbull High School senior who would like to pursue a higher education in the field of art. This student may or may not be at the top of their class. The most important criteria for the individual to have are the love and desire for a future career in art.

The Jay Shannon Memorial Scholarship is our small investment in promoting and encouraging art for the future.

This year’s recipient of the Jay Shannon Memorial Scholarship is a student who participates in the track team, is a member of the Society of Creative Arts of Newtown and the Fairfield Museum and History Center. This individual is also the photographer of the Trillium yearbook and has won numerous awards for photography and will be attending the School for Visual Arts studying photography.

I am very happy to announce the recipient of this year’s Jay Shannon Memorial Scholarship is Alexander Payson.

Dear Family and Friends,

I saw a shooting star! It was so bright and clearly defined, shooting across the sky above and in front of me! It lasted but a second, and then it was gone. How beautiful, rare, and memorable it was! So unexpected; not at all the time of year when shooting stars are prevalent in the skies. My mind lingered on the shooting star long after it was gone.

Our son Jay is like a shooting star. His life was brief but bright, clear, and definitely memorable. We treasure the time we had with him and look forward to the day when we will see him again.

To honor his memory, one of the things we have started is a scholarship fund in Jay's name. It is to be given to a Trumbull High School senior who plans to continue on in their education for a career in Art; just as Jay did. The first scholarship recipient, Emily Clemente went on to study Photography at the School of Visual Arts and last year's recipient, Steven Sikora is also pursuing a degree in Photography at the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley College.

This will be the third year since we started the scholarship. Thanks to so many of you in the past we are able to increase this year's scholarship amount to $700!

And now we are asking for your help again so we could keep this scholarship in Jay‚s name going for many years to come. If you donate an amount of $25 or more, you will receive a Star Wars figure from Jay's own Star Wars collection. No amount is too large or small. Any amount you can give will be greatly appreciated and will help us to continue this scholarship in his name. Please see below how you can donate to the Jay Shannon Memorial Scholarship.

Thank you for your sincere and thoughtful consideration.

Those of you who have recently donated, thank you for your continued support.

As always,

MaryAnn and Jim Salvatore
