Award Speech

Dear family and friends,

It has been almost eight years since we lost our son Jay on May 9, 2008.
This is also the seventh year for the Jay Shannon Memorial Scholarship at Trumbull High School. Thanks to your generous donations we are able to continue to award this scholarship. We are so grateful and pleased to announce the scholarship amount for 2016 will be increased $1,100. It will be presented at THS Awards Night this year.

Past JSM scholarship recipients are:
2015 - Cameron Kimball, Pratt Institute
2014 - Michael Ell, University of Connecticut
2013 - Alexander Payson, School of Visual Arts
2012 - Taylor Calhoun, Howard University
2011 - Steven Sikora, Art Institute of Boston at Lesley College
2010 - Emily Clemente, School of Visual Arts

As before, we are offering Star Wars figures to be selected for you from Jay’s collection as a thank you for a donation of $25 or more to the scholarship fund.

We appreciate your donation of any amount. Your donation is a beautiful gesture to Jay's memory and assists a worthy Trumbull High School senior to help cover some of the ever rising costs of obtaining a higher education in Art.

The 2014 recipient Michael Ell wrote this about receiving the scholarship:

"I feel very blessed and touched to have received this wonderful and extremely meaningful scholarship. I was able to use the scholarship to help obtain the digital equipment that I needed to be successful in the Digital Media and Design Department at the University of Connecticut."

Jay graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York City with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Animation. This experience was greatly rewarding for him; it not only enhanced his creativity and art skills; it also enriched his life in many ways with the lasting friendships he made and the wonderful experience of being in New York City. Our intent is to help another art student in some small way to achieve their dreams in Jay’s memory.

Thank you for your thoughtful consideration.

Peace,
Jim and MaryAnn Salvatore

2016 Award Speech

Jeremiah Shannon, or Jay Shannon, as he was known to his family and friends, once walked these halls of Trumbull High School. He had a passion for art, which started right here in Trumbull. And it carried him to Manhattan, where he attended the School of Visual Arts and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in animation. In addtion to his artistic talents and love of Star wars memorabilia, Jay was known for his loving spirit. Vincent Van Gogh once wrote in a letter to his brother, Theo, "There is nothing more truly artistic than to love people."

It is through the awarding of this scholarship that the love and passion shown by Jay throughout his lifetime lives on. Since 2009, The Jay Shannon Memorial Scholarship has worked to help graduating Trumbull High School seniors enrich their lives by following in Jay's footsteps and studying art in college.

I was privileged to be the 2015 recipient of this scholarship and I am honored to be here tonight to present this year's scholarship to a student who has demomstrated her talent and passion for art throughout her time at Trumbull High School. She has participated in the Photography Club and Creative Minds, as well as designing logos for several local organizations. She has also managed to balance her artistic pursuits while maintaining excellent academic grades. She is a National Honor Society member and will be studing Art at the University of Connecticut in the fall.

Please join me in congratulating this year's recipient of The Jay Shannon Memorial Scholarship... Emma Hopwood.
